This is a fascinating picture! This is a long row of new Western-style homes that have been built just outside a small village between Mbuji Mayi and Mwene Ditu. They have sat here for many years–empty. Some kind NGO or charity spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to come to Africa and build new homes for the poor. The problem was that the villagers, for whom the new homes were built, did not want to live in these homes. They felt uncomfortable, and chose to live in the mud and grass huts they had been living in for thousands of years…so these beautiful homes sit empty! A monument to the misguided goodwill of westerners.
